The genesis of this house lies in the desire to be in the lap of Nature with all its characteristics. Therefore the design was conceptualized as transition from the man-made to the natural. While the approach to the house gives one a ‘curated’ experience with designed garden and controlled greens, once you are inside the units, the raw appeal of the natural surrounding is all pervading. This project, a weekend residence, is located in the natural settings of the ravines of Sabarmati River. Looking at the powerful natural landscape of the site, the project brief was to build a place ‘within’ it, respecting the topography, the flora and fauna, and the entire existing ecosystem of the place. Responding to the characteristic features of the site the architectural concept was to create a ‘Perch’, sitting lightly atop the small flat land, overlooking the valleys. The program, consisting of living room, dining area, kitchen, 2 bedrooms and service facilities, was divided into smaller components, Each component accommodated and nestled itself along the contour profile of the top flat land, avoiding any major cut-fill of the existing terrain. The organization also created a small landscaped forecourt. One of the most important challenges of sustainability is the constant need for resources to make new buildings, and the constant waste the demolition produces. Therefore, approach to materials selection in this project was governed by their recoverability /recyclability. The primary structural materials are M.S. sections and random rubble stone masonry, with minimal R.C.C. for the foundations (i.e. piles and anchor beams). The random rubble stone masonry structures housed the circulation spaces like veranda as well as the service areas like kitchen and toilets. The living spaces are cantilevered steel decks with light-weight envelopes of M.S. framing and fibre cement boards, hanging over the surrounding valleys. The sloping roof forms of Pre-coated sheet roofing with mud rolls as insulation, gently guide the spaces to the view of valleys. The execution of the project had to be conceptualized as an assembly of elements rather than materials and construction. This also necessitated a capacity building of the entire team. A lot of design decisions had to be quickly revisited and modified to respond to the exigencies thrown up by the site. At the same time, using traditional construction methods like random rubble stone masonry enabled the craftsmen to build upon their skill for a dignified living- socially and economically. The mud rolls used for under deck insulation of the roof are also a result of the technological re-invention of traditional wisdom of using mud.
